HOT STONES
Hot Stone massage involves the use of hot and cold stones to create deep relaxing strokes which help prepare and relax tight muscles for massage.
The stones can then be used as part of the massage treatment, or used again during the massage to keep the muscles warm. Stones of different weights and sizes can be placed over muscles and organs that are not currently being massaged to help you and your muscles relax. There are even smaller stones which can fit between your toes.
It is accepted that one stroke of a heated stone is equivalent to 5 strokes from the therapist.
As with massage, hot stone massage increases local circulation and improves blood flow, however this also affects the surrounding tissues.
Basalt stones are most commonly used as they hold their heat well and are smooth to touch. They are heated in a specially designed hot water bath.
Cold marble stones can also be introduced to the session, they are particularly effective in constricting damaged vessels, slowing metabolism and therefore reducing swelling.
